Classroom Community
Classroom and Community
Descriptive
The artifacts selected for the TEP Component V, Classroom & Community, demonstrate competencies and best practices for cultivating a positive and supportive learning community with high expectations for disciplined classroom behavior, and a plan for earning students’ respect.
The artifacts reflect ideas and approaches for fostering and maintaining an inclusive and equitable classroom community, particularly regarding cultural, linguistic, and learning differences.
Artifact 2 shows my dream classroom floorplan, which I designed for the CCTL project. This artifact demonstrates my creativity in crafting a thoughtfully designed classroom that integrates powerful technologies and efficiently allocates space to maximize open spaces and optimize the spaces intended to accommodate multiple teaching and learning scenarios.
Artifact 3 is a sample welcome letter template from the CCTL project that demonstrates evidence of proficiency in working with ESL families. I devised community-building strategies to reach out to the parents and families of ESL students and organized special culturally-related events to bring people to the school for fun community-building activities.
Analytic
I planned every artifact with the idea that fostering and maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and safe classroom community was the highest priority. Creating an environment where teachers and students can feel comfortable, welcomed, and inspired to create, collaborate, and make discoveries daily. The room is decorated with images, symbols, and messages that promote diversity and social justice.
The messages reflect the shared core values that will serve as the foundation for cultivating an inclusive, equitable, and safe classroom community and global citizenship, digital citizenship, social responsibility, and high achievement in ESL and all subject areas. The decór also consists of posters that point out language topics and show grammar rules and linguistics phenomena that are fun to learn. The artifacts reflect a custom plan for a custom room. The open spaces, collaboration stations, computer lab, and optimally designed teacher's workstation show the plan is flexible and adaptable. Cultural decór will celebrate multilingualism and transculturality, emphasizing essential language and content fundamentals and topics that address the community's cultural, linguistic, and learning needs.
Reflective
Fostering and maintaining an inclusive, diverse, equitable, and safe environment remains my highest priority. I try to role model the behaviors I expect from my students in my placement. Being consistent and not showing emotion when upset or angry can be challenging, but it can also be fun when realizing how much we can do as human beings. In the most disruptive situations, exhibiting calmness and control is one of the keys to earning students' trust and respect. Role-modeling the shared values and behaviors I expect from the students in our classroom community is one of my highest priorities as a K-12 classroom teacher.
